Getting Started with Us: First Steps

We're so glad you found us!   If you're considering voice study at Gori Voice Studios, the first thing we like to do is actually talk to you, so that we can learn more about you and your goals for your singing or speaking.  Please call us at (301) 946-6530  up until 9 pm on weekdays and Sundays.   You're also welcome to message us via our Contact page and let us know when we can give you a call.

Step two: the Initial Fit session: $100

Following our phone consultation, the next step is to come in for an Initial Fit session with either Aurelius or Grace.  During this session, we will work with you through both exercises and your choice of repertoire so that we can evaluate where you are right now with your singing.   This session also gives you the opportunity to try out our teaching.  We then can decide together if our studio is right for you and come up with a plan of action to help you achieve your goals.

NEXT: Choose your lesson plan

Welcome to our studio!  Now that you've decided to enroll with us, it's time to figure out the best way to fit lessons into your busy life!  We offer one-to-one lessons both in-person and online, as one-at-a-time drop-in lessons/coachings and as packages.

Drop-In lessons: $90 for 60 minutes

This plan offers the most flexibility for students with unpredictable schedules:  book as many or as few lessons as your work and family schedules allow!    These are also great if you're an experienced singer or speaker and just want vocal coaching help with a specific song or text.  Lessons may be booked up to but no more than two weeks in advance of the lesson date.  Payment is due at the time of the lesson.  Cancel up to 24 hours in advance with no penalty.

  • Drop-in lessons must be canceled at least 24 hours in advance.   If 24 hours’ notice is not given, the full lesson fee will be due.
  • Fall and Spring Semester Plan students may receive a make-up credit for up to three private lessons per semester (one lesson for Summer Semester Plan students), provided that you notify us of your impending absence at least 24 hours in advance of the scheduled lesson.  Lessons missed with less than 24-hours’ notice are not eligible for make-up.  All make-up lessons must be scheduled through the online Student Portal.

2. Student Sickness Policy:

  • If you have a communicable illness and/or a fever, please do not come to your lesson.  We reserve the right to send home sick students.
  • If you are unsure whether your illness is communicable or whether you’ll be well enough to come to your lesson, please let us know by the night before the lesson or as soon as possible.

3. Teacher Absence:

  • If we must miss your lesson due to professional obligation or teacher illness or emergencies, we will give you one extra make-up credit for that lesson.
  • Semester Plan Students:  If our professional performance obligations will make us unavailable during some of your lesson times, we will offer the option to prorate your semester fee to reflect the number of available lessons.
  • In case of inclement weather, please call to see if we are teaching; we do not follow the Montgomery County Public Schools weather schedule.

4. Scheduling Make-up Lessons (Semester Plan students):

  • You are responsible for scheduling your own make-ups through the online Student Portal.
  • Make-ups may be scheduled in any open time slot on the Student Portal calendar.
  • To reschedule a make-up lesson you have already reserved, you must give notice through the Portal at least 24 hours in advance.  A missed make-up lesson cannot be made up.
  • All make-up lessons must be completed by the end of the current semester.
  • You may take a make-up lesson with either Aurelius or Grace, regardless of who your regular teacher is.

5. Student Requirements and Responsibilities:

  • Practice:   You must practice at home between your lessons.  If you’re unsure how or what to practice, please ask us so that we can help you develop a good practice routine.
  • Lesson recording:  For study purposes, you must either record your lessons OR keep a notebook/journal of exercises and technical points discussed at each lesson.
  • Scores and Books:  You must purchase your own copies of music and books.
  • Practice materials:  You must have access to a pitch producing instrument - a piano or electronic keyboard is strongly recommended - for obtaining starting pitches for exercises and learning your own music parts.
  • Accompaniment:  We strongly recommend that you provide your own accompanist or accompaniment recordings so that we can stay focused on helping you technically with the vocal demands of your pieces.

6. Student Prerequisites:

  • You must be in good health and capable of light aerobic activities.  You should not be under any major restrictions concerning movement of your spine or head.
  • For our Sing-Splorer program for singers ages 8 - 11, the child must know how to read, be able to maintain focus during a 30-minute lesson and must be self-motivated. Parents are required to attend these lessons.

7.   Refund Policy:

  • We do not issue refunds except in case of severe illness or death of the student or an immediate family member.  In these cases, we will issue refunds only for lessons which have not yet taken place.

8.  Disclaimers:

  • We are vocal technique teachers; we are not agents, yoga teachers, Alexander Technique teachers, physical therapists, professional accompanists, or repertoire coaches. We are happy to share knowledge from our years of study and experience, but when more in-depth information is required, may refer students to professionals with expertise in these areas.
  • If we feel that you are showing signs of a serious vocal health problem or injury to the vocal mechanism, we reserve the right to refuse to continue lessons with you until after you have consulted a qualified otolaryngologist or speech pathologist and have received permission to continue vocal study from that medical professional.
